Open Hearth Park, Sydney, Nova Scotia
A beautiful park and recreational area has been created in Sydney. Nearly 100 years of steel and coke production on this site had resulted in the deposition of more than 1 million metric tons (1.1 million tons) of contaminated soil and sediment. Remediation, using a solidification and stabilization (S&S) process, has transformed the area into a wonderful community asset. The S&S process involved mixing Lafarge GU cement into the soil in order to immobilize contaminants, thereby improving the environment.
