Athena Sustainable Materials Institute report on potential environmental benefits of Portland-Limestone Cement

Posted on February 27, 2014

Athena has issued a new technical brief that uses lifecycle assessment (LCA) to explore environmental benefits – including reduced CO2 – of Portland-Limestone Cement (PLS).

The results show that PLC can provide 10-12% improvement over Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) across similar mix designs. The report also suggests grater improvements could be possible if Canadian concrete standards were to allow greater PLC substitution levels, comparable to those in Europe.

PLC has been used in Europe for over 40 years. While European cement standards allow up to 35% limestone content, the Canadian standards have permitted the inclusion of up to 15% limestone in four types of PLC.
